Victoria Plains encompasses a cluster of small towns in the north west of the Avon Valley, the most famous being the monastic township of New Norcia. It is an area renowned for its rich history, vibrant wildflower displays and thriving agriculture.
First explored by the European Settlers in the late 1830’s, it did not take long for the area to flourish. Today Victoria Plains sprawls over approximately 257,000 hectares and includes the townships of Bolgart, Calingiri, Piawaning, Yerecoin, New Norcia, Mogumber and Gillingarra.
New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town, providing visitors a truly unique experience.Established in 1847, the town has 69 Spanish influenced buildings, 27 of which are listed by the National Trust.
The best way to discover all that the town has to offer is to take a town walking tour. Visitors have the opportunity to go behind closed doors and hear the fascinating stories of the last 160 years.
Bolgart is a charming little town in which to stop and relax. A recent addition is the display of historic farm artefacts and a lovingly restored rare Model E Marshall tractor, the first tractor to be imported to the area in 1914.
Venture back in time down the main street of Calingiri, the administrative centre of the Shire of Victoria Plains, and boasts friendly hospitality, amazing wildflower displays, and delightful treats available from the cafe, open weekdays.
Wyening Mission Farm, between Bolgart and Calingiri, was established in 1878 by Bishop Salvado, founder of the Benedictine Community at New Norcia. Six of the historic buildings remain, including the Mission House and Cellars, and are available for functions, or guided tours for groups by prior appointment.
Almost everywhere you turn throughout Victoria Plains you will be enthralled by the abundance and beauty of wildflowers. The woodland areas around Victoria Plains are also home to a diverse rangeof wildlife. In Calingiri in particular you will see flocks of the impressive Carnaby Cockatoo.
